Educational Objectives

Discuss the fundamentals of lipid disorders including biology,
physiology, biochemistry, metabolism, and genetics.

Apply the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP)
Adult Treatment Panel (ATP) III guidelines.

Recommend appropriate medical management of patients with lipid
disorders with drug therapy and/or therapeutic lifestyle changes.

Classify patients according to profiles and level of risk and
appropriately manage these patients.

Discuss safety issues including drug interactions.

The need for combination therapy based on the revised ATP III
Guidelines including the optional LDL l70 mg/dL for patients at very
high risk for CHD.

The role of cholesterol absorption and synthesis in the regulation
of lipid metabolism.

The role of plant sterols in the development of atherosclerosis.

The safety and efficacy of combination therapy including potential
drug interactions.

The role of the initiation of combination therapy in patients with
complex lipid abnormalities and/or high risk for CHD.
